VIDEO & story: CBCNews Speaks with Pattinson and Cronenberg

Cast Interview David Cronenberg Director Interview Robert Pattinson Video

This is an very interesting interview that expands on some topics we’ve heard Pattinson and Cronenberg discuss before, but it goes beyond.

My quick notes on the video’s content appear below it. Also see this link for .cbc.ca/news story on talking with the two men and Paul Giamatti about adapting the novel into film.

Cronenberg and Pattinson talk about the quality of the source material. There’s great dialogue, but there’s more. There’s a lot of philosophy in the material, discussed “in an intriguing, funny, and dynamic way.” Yet it’s all part of a movie, not a philosophy class.
Pattinson: it’s much more intimidating to [do something] that is terrible, when the material is good you just have to do it to its full potential.
David Cronenberg talks about how difficult it is to get films financed, small and large. The more unusual, difficult and challenging the movie is, the harder it is.
They talk about the filming developed having organically, but the dialogue did not change. If you are strict with the script, Pattinson says, then you can find out what it really means.
Pattinson responds that he doesn’t think the material is saying anything about capitalism. His first reaction was that it was kind of an absurd comedy. He thinks if it says anything it’s a comment that people don’t recognize the world for what it is, that it is a strange reality.
Cronenberg is asked about digital films again (this is the first film he shot in digital) and repeats that “film is dead.” He notes that on film sets, the audio has been digital for years. He doesn’t miss it as the new cameras are fantastic.
